There’s so much of interest to see in Gran Canaria that you will be spoilt for choice! The travel experts from Spain-Grancanaria have condensed the major attractions into easy-to-follow guides that help you get the best out of your holiday.
Starting on the northeast coast, the capital city of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, is a mandatory stop. Vegueta, one of the oldest quarters in the city, has charming squares, such as Plaza Santa Ana, and the impressive Catedral de Santa Ana. In Triana, a much more bourgeoisie district, you’ll be surrounded by buildings dating back to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, all lined up along Calle Triana, a whole street declared national historic monument.
If you are travelling around the northern coastal areas there are some charming pretty little villages and towns to look out for. Santa María de Guía is full of Canarian character, history and is an enchanting place to visit. Just as captivating is the fishing village of Puerto de las Nieves; here you will find the lovely little chapel Ermita de las Nieves and the breathtaking natural rock formation Dedo de Dios (God’s finger). The lovely town of Agaete is more than 500 years old and is surrounded by steep slopes packed with colourful vegetation — fantastic for photographs.
For a lively atmosphere, attractive plazas, shopping, culture and all the hustle and bustle of a vibrant town, check out Gáldar, which is also steeped in Guanche history.
Moving further away from the coast towards the island’s inland, the mountains become more evident, and you may visit several towns with many historical monuments, such as Arucas’ huge neo-Gothic cathedral or Teror’s colonial-style buildings.
The roads are quite narrow, bendy and steep in this area so buckle up and enjoy the fantastic panoramic views that will unfold around every corner!
