Having your own wheels is always the best way to explore any place, but just in case you're not in the mood to drive you can always search for a taxi. In the south they are easy to spot as they are white and have a distinctive red stripe on their front doors. They change colour depending on the location. In Las Palmas, for example, taxis are white with a blue stripe on the doors. Also, they display the letters SP (Servicio Público) with a green light on top or at the front of the car, indicating that the taxi is vacant and able to be hired.

Local journeys are metered and charges increase depending on what day of the week and time you use them. There is a basic rate Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 22:00 and a more expensive rate from 22:00 to 06:00. Sundays and public holidays are also charged at a more expensive rate. If you’re travelling outside municipal boundaries, make a point of arranging a fixed fare in advance. From the airport to Las Palmas, depending on the time of day and where you’re staying, the fare will fluctuate. In the south of the island, where taxis belong to a local co-operative, using a cab is a good, inexpensive way to travel.
