The curious thing about the name of this town, ‘Valleseco’ – literally meaning ‘Dry Valley’ – is that this area receives more rainfall per year than any other region on the island.

Apart from the Iglesia de San Vicente Ferrer whose original chapel dates from the first half of the 17th century, and the Laguna de Valleseco (Valleseco Lagoon), which fills with fresh water during the winter months and which was recently subjected to important environmental restoration programmes, this quiet village in the mountains would appear to offer not a lot more. Yet, it’s actually a hive of agricultural activity.

During the winter months many migratory birds, including the common egret, make this area their temporary home.
