Central - Tafira
In the centre of the island are Tafira Baja and Tafira Alta – two wealthy suburbs of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with magnificent residences, built in a variety of architectural styles and surrounded by beautiful gardens. With their colourful, multi-styled villas, these two up-market suburbs have managed to maintain their original colonial-style ambiance.
Tafira Alta is the favoured residential area of Las Palmas’ financial elite and wealthy foreigners, combining the Italian country-house style with spacious terraces, verandas and magnificent gardens prevails. Here, at the beginning of the 20th century, the British built elegant hotels – including Los Frailes – where historical political meetings took place.
Upon entering Tafira Baja you’ll find the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, founded in 1989 and built in a predominately neoclassical style – albeit with some Bauhaus influences.
The highlight of Tafira Baja remains, however, the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo where from the moment you park, you’ll be able to tune into the beauty of birdsong.
