Inland Route - Firgas
Next point of interest on this route is Firgas, a small town famous for its production of sparkling mineral water, which is drawn from a spring in Barranco de la Virgen, just 5 km (about 3 miles) away. Filled in over 200,000 bottles a day, this tasty water is very popular throughout the islands.
This pleasant little town, which celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1988, features the Paseo de Gran Canaria, where a man-made waterfall cascades 30 meters (about 100 ft) down shallow steps in the centre of a pedestrian passage laid out in 1995. On the backrests of benches at the walls of bordering houses you can see beautifully painted landscapes or historic symbols of Gran Canaria.
An unusual lesson of the Canary Islands’ geography can be appreciated further along this passage, where big slabs with ceramic ornaments show maps and views of all the islands.
This very entertaining promenade ends at Firgas’ Cultural Centre and at the neighbouring square, flanked by the Town Hall and the Iglesia San Roque (church), where young and old meet at any time of the day.
