Casa Museo de Pérez GaldósThe birthplace of Benito Pérez Galdós (1843 – 1920), the most distinguished writer from the Canary Islands, was turned into a museum commemorating the author’s life and work. This five-storey building, which the author continued to live in until 1862, is a fine example of 18th century Canarian architecture, built, as it is, around a small patio adorned with a statue of the writer.
The Casa Museo de Pérez Galdós, which opened in 1964, still boasts the original interior decoration and displays objects associated with the writer’s life, portraits and items from his houses in Madrid and Santander, many of which he designed and made himself, as well as photographs of many actors who appeared in his plays. A library contains original works and translations, correspondence, meeting minutes and dissertations from this greatly-revered author. Opening hours: Monday – Friday 10.00 to 14.00 hrs and 16.00 to 20.00 hrs; Saturday & Sunday 10.00 to 14.00 hrs. Our tip: Free to enter, this museum also offers guided tours. |
